Temperature Sections

The temperature sections presented on the following pages are taken at various locations around the coast. They are meant to provide some insight into the way the temperature structure of the oceans vary in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

Port Edward

The rise of the isotherms between the coast and about 100-150 km offshore coincides with the presence of the Agulhas Current.

Note the large amount of water taken up by temperatures below 5°C.

Port Elizabeth

The rise of the isotherms (= position of the Agulhas Current ) is located between 50 and 150 km.

Cape Agulhas

The warm water in the top right is related to the Agulhas Current Retroflection.

A large part of the area between South Africa and Antarctica is characterised by water temperatures below 5°C.
